BIRDHOUSE IN YOUR SOUL

Not to put too-fine a point on it, say I'm the only bee in your bonnet!

I've been catching up on the final episodes of one of my favorite (and now-canceled) programs, Pushing Daisies ... and I got so swept away with the beauty, romance and general wonder of the show that I went and downloaded the Season One Soundtrack.

Its made up mostly of instrumental music - music that won an Emmy, by the way - but there are a few vocal tracks that make it all worth while. One such track is Ellen Greene (formerly of Little Shop of Horrors, to name one) and Kristin Chenoweth (of Wicked, to name another) covering They Might Be Giants' "Birdhouse In Your Soul."

I love the original version well enough, but this new version absolutely swept me off my feet. Here's the video:

The second season comes out on DVD next month, and I can't wait!

SAD, SAD NEWS

According to Boston.com (article here), ABC is not renewing (read, canceling) Eli Stone and Pushing Daisies. These are two of my favorite shows... I'm so sad.

Both programs show an extraordinary attention to proper character development and well-developed story arcs. Both shows were a visual treat, with great attention paid to music and color. Both shows were fresh and unique, something that seems to be lacking, across all networks.

Both of these wonderful programs are being left out to dry, while insipid shows like The Bachelor, somehow manage to keep coming back.

I'm excited to pass along a great piece of news: on the list of ABC Network shows returning to the air next season (this fall): PUSHING DAISIES!

DAISY SOUP?

I was very happy to see ABC decided to start posting new episodes of Pushing Daisies on its web site - especially since I mis-programmed the VCR last night.

But what brought an even bigger smile to my face was the appearance of episode guest star, and The Soup host Joel McHale. This episode, like many others, was sock-boffo, from start to finish, and if you've missed any previous episodes, all but one are available on ABC's web site.

It is a romantic, funny show that deals with dark and deep subject matter in a unique, fresh and unusual way. I highly recommend this show.
